Lecture 4

The Five Hindrances and The Seven Factors of Enlightenment

This lecture will follow on from the previous week by looking at the cultivation of awareness with respect to the Five Hindrances and Seven Factors of Enlightenment. These are both covered in the fourth section of the Satipatthana Sutta which addresses developing awareness at the level of the dharmas, the most refined level.

See “In the Buddha’s Words” P286/7 for Five Hindrances

And P288/9 for Seven Enlightenment Factors as outlined in Satipatthana Sutta.

The Five Hindrances and Seven Factors of Enlightenment are related topics; working with the hindrances being a necessary pre-requisite for cultivating the Seven Factors, which lead us towards Enlightenment.

For how they are connected see “In the Buddha’s Words” Sariputra’s Lofty Utterance SN 47:12 V 159-61 Pages 416/17
